About the project

MyTalent is a social platform where artists, creators, athletes and innovators show what they do, find their people and grow. In three months our team launched the social network and the app, then spent two more polishing it. I started with the brand, the logo and the mascot, and then designed the UX and UI of the web version.

My role

Logo, mascot, UX and UI of the web app, design system

Team

Two designers, a PM and developers. I led the web, Oleksandr led the mobile app

Timeline

3 months to launch, then 2 more to polish

Result

About 300 people a day were posting content

Logo

The client wanted to move away from the old sports-looking star: keep the star, but make it cleaner, more confident and not only about sports. The search came down to three directions: a person, creativity and connections. We picked the star-person, and later I updated the sign: the head breaks out of the icon and the star leans, as if the person is moving.

Mascot

I came up with the mascot so the interface would not feel dry. It grew out of the logo: a round floating head over a soft star body. I generated it with Nano Banana from one reference and a fixed prompt template, so the character stays the same whether it sings, paints or searches.

The task

Launch a social network for talents in three months, on the web and in the app. Requirements came from the PM and from regular calls with the client. We designed for two people:

Creator

Shows their work, builds an audience, runs groups and hosts events

Viewer

Looks for talents by interest, follows them, joins groups and comes to events

What we looked at

  • Instagram
  • Reddit
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Luma

There was no time for a big study, so we looked at how the platforms people already use solve the same jobs. For Events we leaned on Luma.

04

From wireframe to final

Design ran almost in parallel with development, so we worked in short loops. Every feature was split into epics and user stories, so each one could be designed, handed off and built on its own, and shared components came first.

05

Key decisions

01

Content first

Talents come to show their work, so the interface steps back. A calm three-column layout keeps navigation on the left, the feed in the middle and discovery on the right. Talents, groups and posts share one card system, and on mobile web the feed takes the whole screen.

02

An interface that feels alive

A minimal interface can easily feel empty. The mascot fills empty states and posts, and 3D badges add a bit of play, so the product feels friendly even before people have posted anything.

Design system

With Oleksandr we took gluestack v2 as a starting point and rebuilt it almost from scratch to fit the product. One system covered both the web and the mobile app.

Variables

Colours and sizes as variables instead of hard-coded values

Tokens

Design tokens shared by the web and the mobile app

Components

Result and takeaways

In three months we launched a social network and an app, and in two more we polished them. While we worked on the product, about 300 people a day were posting content on MyTalent.

Next time I would set up the process differently from day one and work much closer with the developers. We were in constant contact, but with deadlines this tight design reviews of the build were not always possible.
